Release 5.0.0, January 6th, 1998 - Unannounced preliminary version
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Release 5.0.2 is the most significant upgrade since October 1996.

OVERVIEW: ViSta is now much more suited for use in Introductory
Statistics courses. It now has an extensive help system, and has
visualizations for univariate, bivariate, and classification data, as
well as for simple regression. It can also perform unbalanced ANOVA.
Data management has been simplified. Color has been added throughout.
The new features are summarized below.

HELP: The major changes include a new help system. The system includes
a Help menu, an "About These Data" menu item, help for menu items, help
for spreadplots, and help for all graphics windows. The graphics
windows have a help button, as well as an item in the Help menu.

ANALYSES: ANOVA can analyze unbalanced data. ANOVA and UNIVAR no longer
must use table data, eliminating the need for table data, and thereby
simplifying data management. Errors in UNIVAR have been fixed.

VISUALIZATIONS: Color has been added to the visualizations. New
visualizations are available for univariate and bivariate data, for
simple regression, and for bivariate multiple regression. Nearly all
previous visualizations have been improved, some with major
modifications. Boxplots have been enhanced, including an option for
parallel coordinate plots. Spreadplot windows always close. Spreadplot
layout and management has been improved.

MISCELLANEOUS: Reports have been improved for ANOVA, UNIVAR and
PRINCOMP. Color has been added throughout. A text window is
available for MS-Windows. Messy windows have been eliminated. There is
a new dynamic opening screen, ABOUT VISTA and screen-saver. WorkMap

Release 4.21, December 17th, 1995 - MAJOR MACINTOSH RELEASE
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

This release should be much more robust on the Macintosh than earlier
releases, due to the bug fixes described below. If you are using an
earlier version of ViSta, especially on the Macintosh, you are strongly
urged to use this version instead.

NEW FEATURES 1) A new Univariate Analysis module is included, which
does t- or Z-tests (and confidence intervals) for one sample, two
paired samples or two independent samples, and does Mann-Whitney and
Wilcoxen tests in appropriate cases. The visualization is not yet
available. 2) The name of the "Show-Datasheet" item has been changed to
"Edit Datasheet". Associated with this change, "Open Data" has been
changed to do a "Browse Data" rather than a "Show Datasheet" after the
data are loaded. Also, double-clicking a data icon now does a "Browse
Data" rather than a "Show Datasheet".

BUG FIXES 1) Macintosh exit bug fixed. 2) Bugs have been removed from
"Create Data". 3) A bug has been removed when converting table data to
multivariate class data.

Release 4.08, July 19th, 1995 - MAJOR RELEASE - ALL OPERATING SYSTEMS
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The main new feature in this release is a datasheet editor with which
you can create and manipulate datasets. You can now import data from a
text file, and double-click data icons to open their datasheets. The
transformation menu has been completed, as have the data manipulation
features for matrix data. Other new features have been added and many
features that were previously incomplete have been completed. See below
for more details.

DATASHEET EDITOR: A datasheet editor is now available. It allows you to
edit existing data and to enter new data. You no longer have to prepare
datafiles using lisp statements, although these previously described
features are available. The datasheet is accessed through the SHOW
DATASHEET item of the DATA menu, and the NEW DATA, OPEN DATA, and
IMPORT DATA items of the FILE menu. The BROWSE DATA item of the DATA
menu also displays data in datasheet form but does not allow editing.
You cannot analyze a data object when its datasheet is open.

IMPORT DATA: A new FILE menu item is available for importing
multivariate data. The data being imported must be in a text (ascii)
file. The first line of the file specifies the data for the first
observation. Succeeding lines specify the data for succeeding
observations, and must contain the same number of data elements as are
on the first line. Data elements must be separated by spaces.

WORKMAP: Double-clicking a data icon opens the data to reveal the
data's datasheet. Double-clicking a model icon opens the model to
reveal the model's report. For MS-WINDOWS, you can now open a reduced
(iconized) window from the icon. You can also open the window from the
WINDOWS menu as well as the COMMAND window.

TRANSFORMATION MENU: The transformation menu has been completed. There
are 30 transformations now available, plus a user-defined menu item
that gives access to additional user-defined transformations.

MATRIX DATA: Data manipulation features for Matrix Data have been
completed. You can now subset matrix data by matrix or by row/column,
and you can merge separate matrix data objects into one.

OPEN DATA, LOAD DATA and IMPORT DATA: These menu items now always open
to the data folder. To support this, the data folder has been
restructed.

DATA and MODEL menus: These menus have been modified so that menu items
for data and model object names are optionally appended to the end of
the menus, rather than always being appended. The option is controlled
by a new preference feature. This takes care of a MS-WINDOWS problem
with menus being too long for the screen.

ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE: SAVE MODEL and CREATE DATA menu items have been
implemented. VISUALIZE MODEL is still not completed.

CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS: Now analyzes all active numeric data rather
than all numeric data.

PRINCIPLE COMPONENTS: The visualization has been slightly improved.

BUG LIST: A BUG LIST menu item has been added to the COMMAND menu. It
lists known bugs and tells you how to report unknown bugs that you
discover.
